The Difference between Bespoke, Made-to-order & Ready to wear Fashion
Hey beautiful people, as promised I’ve written a short guide to break down & explain the difference between bespoke, made to order & ready to wear clothing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Made to order - This is usually offered on online fashion boutiques, there will be a wide range of designs to choose from. The customer will choose the design they like, enter their measurements and pay for the garment. Once the order has been made the fabric is sourced, cut to make the garment & sent out. This takes around 2-3 weeks depending on the brand. The garment is made for you specifically. Therefore, it cannot be returned, exchanged & you won’t receive a refund if you decide you don’t like it. You can’t order two to see the best fit & send back as you would a ready to wear item from a high street retailer. However, some designers will offer a free alteration service where possible. It’s easier to make garments smaller than it is to make them larger for instance, so make sure you know your measurements to avoid disappointment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ready to wear items have been created in bulk by a manufacturer, & sold by high street retailers as off the rack pieces. With these you can get a refund if you aren’t satisfied, order multiples & send garments back for an exchange. Alterations services aren’t offered for ready to wear & they are sold in a standard dress size. However, you can get a seamstress to alter these for you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bespoke clothing - now this one a seamstress will take your individual measurements & transfer these to a paper pattern to create your one of a kind garment. You get to choose fabrics, colours, trims & design your own garment. This garment is made to your exact measurements & design specifications so the garment fits like a glove. These garments can be altered but this usually takes place during a face to face fitting & before the final payment has been made. As with made to order, refunds and exchanges aren’t accepted.
